A capacitor is an electronic component that stores electrical energy in an electric field. It consists of two conductive plates, typically made of metal, separated by a non-conductive material known as a dielectric. When a voltage is applied across the plates, an electric field is created, causing electrons to collect on one plate and move away from the other plate. This creates a potential difference, or voltage, between the plates, which allows the capacitor to store electrical energy.
The capacitance of a capacitor is a measure of its ability to store electrical charge and is determined by the size and spacing of the plates, as well as the type of dielectric material used. Capacitors are commonly measured in units of farads (F), although other units such as microfarads (μF) and picofarads (pF) are also commonly used.
Capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits for a variety of applications, such as filtering, smoothing, timing, and decoupling. They are commonly used in power supply circuits to smooth out voltage fluctuations and reduce noise. They are also used in filter circuits to block or pass certain frequencies and in timing circuits to create a specific time delay.
