A DMA (Direct Memory Access) controller is an electronic circuit that manages the transfer of data between devices without involving the CPU. It enables data to be transferred between memory and other devices, such as input/output (I/O) devices or storage devices, without interrupting the CPU. DMA controllers are commonly used in systems that require high-speed data transfer, such as multimedia systems and data storage systems.

DMA controllers work by allowing devices to access the system's memory directly, without going through the CPU. The DMA controller manages the transfer of data between devices and memory, and can transfer data in large blocks, reducing the number of interrupts that are required. This allows the CPU to focus on other tasks while the data transfer is taking place.

DMA controllers can also provide additional features such as bus arbitration, which is used to resolve conflicts that occur when multiple devices attempt to access the bus at the same time.
